There are two ceremony spaces at the Ravenswood. Outdoor ceremonies are held in front of the Little Castle, and indoor ceremonies are held in the Baronial Hall.

The Ravenswood is set within 18 acres of landscaped lawns, gardens and lakes in the Sussex countryside near Sharpthorne, on the edge of Ashdown Forest, West Sussex.
Despite its secluded, rural feel, it's easy to reach - close to the M23 and within easy reach of London and the South East, making it a brilliant choice for couples with guests travelling from further afield or overseas. (See the full travel details below.)

The Little Castle
The Little Castle is one of the most photogenic spots at The Ravenswood, and it's where outdoor ceremonies take place. Its weathered stone and turret-like structure give ceremony photos a genuinely romantic, storybook quality without feeling staged.
It also works brilliantly for confetti photos straight after the ceremony - the stonework gives a rich, textured backdrop that photographs beautifully in any light.
Because it's right at the heart of the venue, there's no need to walk guests anywhere for this - everyone can gather naturally, keeping the flow of the day relaxed.
The Boathouse & Lake
Ideal for calm, natural portraits, the Boathouse & Lake offer reflections and soft, open light that create timeless, understated wedding images.
It's just a couple of minute's walk from the main building, making it easy to include without taking you away from your guests for long. I particularly love this spot in the evening, when the light softens and the water takes on a warm, golden tone - perfect for a short walk here with your partner between the wedding breakfast and evening celebrations.
The Secret Garden
With its pergola, the Secret Garden offers a quiet, tucked-away space ideal for relaxed couple portraits. In the daytime the natural light is soft and flattering; at night, strings of lights create a lovely romantic feel.
It's one of my favourite spots for couples who want a few minutes away from the celebrations - private, calm, and visually distinct from the rest of the venue's grounds.
The Lawns
The lawns at The Ravenswood are perfect for effortless, documentary-style wedding photography, where you and your guests can move freely and moments happen naturally.
They also work brilliantly for group photos - there's enough open space to organise larger family combinations quickly, without the day feeling rushed or overly directed.
The Woodland & Grounds
Great for candid wedding photography, the woodland and grounds offer soft, diffused light and natural surroundings that encourage you to relax and be yourselves.
This is one of the quieter corners of the estate, making it ideal for a short walk together during the day if you'd like a few unposed, intimate moments away from the main celebrations.
The Ruins
The ruins at The Ravenswood provide a beautifully textured backdrop where relaxed, unposed moments create authentic, storytelling-led wedding photographs.
The weathered stone contrasts beautifully with wedding attire, and this spot works particularly well for couples who want something a little different from the classic manor-house shot.
The Birdcage

The Baronial Hall
The character-filled interior of the historic Baronial Hall is perfect for indoor wedding photos that highlight the venue's 15th-century architecture. It's also where indoor ceremonies take place, in front of the large open fireplace.
This is one of the best backup spaces if the weather turns - the warm wood panelling and grand proportions mean indoor photos here never feel like a compromise.

Fireplace & Interior Spaces
The interior spaces provide a warm, atmospheric setting that's perfect for capturing real moments as they unfold, especially during winter weddings. The open fireplace is a beautiful natural backdrop, particularly for couples marrying between October and February.
The Grand Staircase
The grand staircase at The Ravenswood is ideal for relaxed, informal group photos. It also adds to the charm of indoor ceremonies held in front of the fireplace, giving photos a sense of scale and grandeur without feeling formal.
A Real Ravenswood Wedding
Chloe and Josh’s winter wedding at the Ravenswood perfectly shows how the venue lends itself to a warm, characterful celebration, especially at Christmas.
They were drawn to the Ravenswood for its cosy atmosphere, particularly the fireplace in the Baronial Hall. The ceremony took place in front of the large open fireplace, creating a setting that felt intimate, relaxed and full of seasonal atmosphere.
The day was full of thoughtful touches, from an emotional first look with Chloe’s Dad through to a lively drinks reception and a packed dance floor later on.
One of the highlights was a surprise Santa’s grotto set up in the Little Castle, which added a fun and memorable twist for guests.
To fully embrace the festive feel, Chloe and Josh even included two live reindeer with a sleigh outside, which quickly became a real talking point for guests. It added a fun, memorable element to the evening and gave everyone something a little different to enjoy, while also creating some unique, natural moments that worked beautifully in the photos.
Throughout the day, the layout of the Ravenswood made everything feel easy and connected, allowing plenty of time for guests to enjoy the surroundings while moments unfolded naturally.
It all built towards a brilliant evening celebration, with a relaxed, energetic party to finish the day.

How long should we allow for couple photos?
A total of up to 30 minutes is usually enough for relaxed, natural portraits without taking you away from your guests for too long.
What time is best for couple photos?
Couple photos are usually taken between the ceremony and the wedding breakfast.
If time and light allow, it works well to split them into two short sessions - one earlier in the day and another later after your Wedding Breakfast while the room is being turned around ready for the evening celebrations.
This means you spend more time with your guests during your drinks reception, and you’ll often feel more relaxed later, after the speeches are out of the way, which leads to more natural, authentic photos.
When should we do confetti photos?
You have a couple of options.
Doing confetti as you walk back up the aisle creates really energetic, natural photos and saves time. The downside is you may still have confetti in your hair at your group photos.
Alternatively, having your confetti photos after the group shots avoids confetti in your hair and down your dress, and allows for a more styled image with your guests in the background, which works beautifully.
How many group photos should we plan?
Keeping it to a maximum of 10, preferably 5 - 8 groups, helps keep things quick and relaxed.
My aim is always to take you away from your guest for as little time as possible so I'll design your group photo list for you so they happen fast.
What happens if it rains?
The Ravenswood has plenty of indoor and sheltered locations that still work beautifully for natural photographs.
The light-filled Jacobean Suite at Ravenswood, with its white panelling, is a great indoor space for your group photos. Alternatively, the Baronial Hall, with its big open fireplace and stairs, has a more cosy feel.
Will we need to walk far for photos?
No - everything is close together, so it’s easy to move around without disrupting the flow of your day. The lake and boathouse are just a minute’s walk from the main building and are well worth the short walk.

Yes - around two months before your Ravenswood wedding, we’ll have a planning meeting to go through the finer details of your day. I’ll guide you through your timeline so everything flows naturally and gives you the best opportunity for relaxed, authentic photography.
