If you're looking for a South Lodge Hotel wedding photographer, choosing someone who knows the venue well can make a real difference to how relaxed and natural your photographs feel.
A South Lodge Hotel & Spa wedding offers beautiful gardens, elegant interiors and plenty of opportunities for relaxed, natural photography throughout the day. As a wedding photographer at South Lodge, one of the things I love most is how much variety the venue offers without ever needing to take couples away from their guests for too long.
I've photographed many weddings at South Lodge over the years... I know where the light works best, the quietest spots for portraits, the ideal timing for confetti and sunset photos, and how to make the most of the venue whatever the weather. Find out more about how I work here.

“Andy made us feel cared for in an individualised way, not just another job!"
"My now husband and I both aren’t overly comfortable in front of the camera but Andy made us feel so at ease."
South Lodge is a fantastic Sussex wedding venue perfectly located on the edge of the South Downs, surrounded by 93 acres of countryside.
Despite feeling wonderfully secluded, it’s surprisingly easy to reach, sitting just outside Horsham - making it a brilliant choice for couples searching for a Horsham wedding photographer or venue in the heart of West Sussex. There are good transport links from London and across the South East, including easy access to London Gatwick Airport.
If you want a venue that feels like a countryside retreat without being difficult for guests to travel to, a South Lodge wedding is an ideal balance.
There's a wide choice of ceremony spaces for indoor ceremonies - elegant rooms filled with natural light, perfect for weddings at any time of year.
If you're dreaming of an outdoor ceremony, The Pavilion on the lawns with it's views back to the hotel is a stunning option as you say your vows.
The grounds at South Lodge are a huge part of its appeal.
The gardens, lawns and countryside views provide wonderful spaces for drinks receptions and relaxed moments your guests.
The terrace is particularly popular during warmer months, allowing everyone to enjoy the scenery while celebrating together.
Weddings here have a relaxed yet elegant atmosphere.
There's a blend of historic charm and modern spaces that create a warm, welcoming setting where couples and guests can truly relax and enjoy the celebration.
Couples are drawn to South Lodge because it offers the complete experience... breathtaking scenery, flexible spaces and exceptional service.
The venue team are known for their attention to detail and care - every wedding feels personal and seamless.
Combined with the stunning surroundings, it’s a place where you and your guests can truly relax and enjoy every moment of your day.
South Lodge has become one of the most sought-after venues in the region, combining the feel of a country house hotel with everything couples want from a luxury Sussex wedding venue.
For couples searching for a wedding venue near Horsham or in West Sussex, South Lodge strikes a lovely balance between luxury, countryside charm and flexibility.
Whether you’re planning an intimate celebration or a larger wedding with all of your friends and family, the venue offers a range of beautiful spaces that can work throughout the seasons.
It’s one of those rare venues that feels equally suited to elegant black tie weddings, relaxed outdoor celebrations and everything in between.
The Outdoor Pavilion is easily one of the most iconic photo locations at South Lodge. Set within the grounds to the rear of the hotel, it offers beautiful symmetry, elegant detailing and stunning views back towards the house and across the surrounding Sussex countryside.
If you’re having an outdoor ceremony here, it naturally becomes one of the most meaningful spots for photographs throughout the day.
It’s perfect for emotional ceremony images, confetti photos and relaxed portraits afterwards. I also love using the Pavilion later in the day when the light softens, creating a calm and romantic setting for a few relaxed couples portraits.
Because the Pavilion sits slightly away from the busier drinks reception areas, it often feels quieter too, giving couples a chance to breathe for five minutes and simply enjoy being married.
One of South Lodge’s hidden gems is the wild meadow area tucked away within the grounds.
It’s not always obvious to guests, which makes it feel like a bit of a secret location for portraits.
At the right time of year, the pathway through the meadow becomes incredibly photogenic, surrounded by soft grasses and seasonal wildflowers. It feels completely different from the elegant hotel gardens and adds a much more natural, relaxed countryside feel to your wedding gallery.
I particularly love bringing couples here for a short wander... walking, chatting and simply being together creates natural moments that feel genuine and effortless in photographs. It works beautifully during spring and summer weddings and looks especially lovely in softer evening light.
The terrace at South Lodge is one of the best places for relaxed documentary wedding photography.
During drinks receptions it becomes the social heart of the day, with guests chatting, laughing, enjoying drinks and taking in the incredible views across the South Downs countryside.
Rather than overly posed images, this is where I’m often capturing the storytelling moments that help your gallery feel complete - hugs between family members, champagne toasts, children running around and all those in-between moments couples often miss while the day flies by.
If you’re planning a summer wedding at South Lodge, the pathway through the long grass down towards the lake and swing seat is one of my absolute favourite spots for couples photos.
There’s something incredibly romantic about the texture and movement of the grass, particularly when the evening breeze catches it. As the sun starts to drop lower, this area catches beautiful golden light, making it ideal for sunset portraits that feel relaxed, atmospheric and completely natural.
The best part is that it never feels forced or overly posed.
Often we’ll simply take a short stroll together for a couple of minutes while you chat, enjoy a quiet moment away from the celebrations and soak everything in.
The result is natural, emotional images that genuinely feel like you.
The covered front entrance at South Lodge is one of those underrated locations that works brilliantly for wedding photography throughout the year.
Architecturally, it frames couples beautifully and creates a timeless backdrop that feels elegant and quintessentially “South Lodge”. It works especially well for portraits, family photos and candid arrivals as guests make their way into the venue.
Perhaps most importantly - it’s also one of my favourite backup locations if the British weather decides not to cooperate. Even on rainy wedding days, the covered entrance allows us to create beautiful relaxed portraits without anyone getting soaked, meaning the weather rarely becomes a problem for your photos.
In spring, one of the most visually striking features on the South Lodge estate is the large rhododendron at the front of the hotel. When it's in full bloom (typically April into May) it produces a spectacular burst of deep, rich colour that creates an extraordinary natural backdrop.
There's nothing subtle about it, and that's exactly the point. Against the soft tones of wedding attire and the historic facade of the hotel, the vivid blooms create images that feel lush, romantic and completely unique to this time of year.
It's very much a seasonal opportunity - if you're planning a spring wedding at South Lodge, this is worth specifically including in your timeline. Couples who make the most of it almost always end up with standout images that feel very different from the rest of the day.
For couples wanting something a little more atmospheric, the staircase near the Disraeli Suite is one of my favourite indoor photography spots at South Lodge.
The elegant interior, soft light and classic styling make it ideal for more editorial-feeling portraits while still keeping everything relaxed and natural.
It works brilliantly in every season and is particularly useful during winter weddings or wet weather when we want beautiful indoor options without compromising on variety.
I often use this space for a mixture of relaxed portraits as it creates lovely depth in photographs and feels timeless without being overly formal.
Hidden further down the hill near the lake, the swinging seat is one of South Lodge’s quieter, more intimate locations for couples portraits.
Suspended beneath the tree, it feels peaceful and slightly tucked away from the rest of the celebrations.
The surroundings are beautiful and natural, making it perfect for informal photographs that feel romantic without being posed.
Because it’s slightly removed from the main venue spaces, this spot works especially well later in the day when things calm down a little and you can simply enjoy a few moments together away from the noise of the wedding.
One of the things I love most about South Lodge wedding photography is the sheer variety of locations available without ever feeling rushed around the grounds.
Here are some of my favourite places around South Lodge for gorgeous wedding photos...
Ben and Christy’s wedding at South Lodge Hotel took place on a warm June day... perfect for the relaxed and fun wedding they had planned.
While there was plenty of sunshine, there were also periods of soft cloud cover drifting through during the day, which actually worked beautifully for photographs.
One of the things couples are often surprised by is that bright sunshine isn’t always ideal for photography. Soft, light cloud cover can create incredibly flattering light, helping everything feel softer and more natural in photographs while still allowing everyone to enjoy being outdoors.
They held their ceremony outdoors at The Pavilion, South Lodge’s beautiful outdoor ceremony space. With views back towards the terrace and across the countryside, it was the ideal setting for the relaxed outdoor wedding ceremony they wanted.
Their gorgeous dog, Alfie, was the ring bearer - and it was always going to be slightly unpredictable not knowing quite which direction he’d head with the rings safely secured around his neck! Thankfully, dog treats worked wonders and made for some brilliant moments and lots of laughter!
Confetti was thrown as Ben and Christy walked back up the aisle after the ceremony, which I always love for outdoor weddings at South Lodge. There’s a ton of energy in the photographs because you’ve literally just got married, and it avoids needing to organise guests again later for a separate confetti line.
One of the things I particularly love about outdoor ceremonies at South Lodge is how naturally the day flows afterwards. Guests not involved in group photographs can head straight up to the terrace to relax, while the family photographs (AKA 'the formals') can happen nearby without feeling intrusive or taking over the drinks reception.
For Ben and Christy’s group photos, we used the steps at the rear of South Lodge Hotel, which work brilliantly as a backdrop thanks to their symmetry and the period-style lamp posts either side.
It’s one of my favourite spots for group photographs at South Lodge, particularly as there’s usually around 90 minutes between the ceremony finishing and guests being seated for the wedding breakfast, meaning there’s enough time to keep everything feeling relaxed without rushing.
Summer weddings at South Lodge work particularly well because guests can really ebb and flow throughout the venue, making the whole day feel relaxed and effortless.
During drinks reception, the South Lodge team keep everything running seamlessly, bringing around delicious canapés while guests enjoy drinks from the bar and make the most of the terrace beside at the back of the hotel. With beautiful countryside views, comfortable seating, parasols and plenty of space to relax, it’s the perfect spot for guests to catch up, enjoy the atmosphere and soak up the surroundings.
They also took some time to enjoy photographs during this period with their beautiful Rolls-Royce wedding car before heading back to mingle with their guests.
After the wedding breakfast, the same room was transformed for the evening reception, with the dance floor set up and tables rearranged for guests wanting somewhere comfortable when the first dance and evening celebrations really got going.
Later in the evening, Ben and Christy walked hand in hand near the wildflower meadow as soft evening light filtered through the trees, creating beautifully flattering light for some natural, relaxed photographs without taking them away from the celebration for long.
One of the lovely things about this area at South Lodge is how private it feels... away from guests and with space to simply slow down for a few minutes, to take everything in and reflect on the day so far.
Thanks to the warm June weather, many guests continued mingling outside throughout the evening - wandering across the rear lawns, drifting between the terrace and bar, and making the most of everything South Lodge has to offer.
Overall, it was a wonderfully relaxed South Lodge wedding and such a pleasure to photograph.
A fantastic South Lodge wedding with a genuinely lovely couple!
If you’re hoping for beautiful evening portraits, my favourite spot at South Lodge is the long grass leading down towards the lake.
During golden hour, the light here can be absolutely gorgeous - soft, warm and flattering without feeling overly staged.
What many couples don’t realise is that timing matters far more than the exact location.
In spring and summer especially, I’ll often keep an eye on the light during dinner and suggest slipping away for just 10–15 minutes when conditions are at their best. It’s enough time for some relaxed portraits without missing too much of the celebration.
One of the advantages of South Lodge is that the best sunset location feels private and peaceful without being miles away from your guests.
For group photographs, the rear lawns tend to work best thanks to the open space and beautiful views beyond.
There’s enough room to organise larger family groups comfortably, while still keeping the backdrop clean and elegant.
It also works particularly well because guests naturally gather nearby after the ceremony and drinks reception, meaning people are usually easy to round up without too much disruption.
I’m always a big fan of keeping group photos efficient and well-organised at South Lodge - enough time to capture the important family combinations, but not so long that it takes over the flow of the day.
One of the best ways to avoid unnecessary stress on a South Lodge wedding day is to build in a little extra time before the ceremony.
Even a small pre-ceremony buffer can make a huge difference if hair and makeup overruns slightly, guests arrive late, or you simply want a few moments to breathe before everything begins.
The weddings that feel most relaxed are rarely the ones with military-level schedules - they’re the ones with a little breathing space built in.
At South Lodge especially, where there are so many beautiful spaces to enjoy, giving yourself time to properly soak everything in makes a real difference to how the day feels.
Around 30 minutes for couple portraits at South Lodge is usually ideal, although I’ll often recommend splitting this into two smaller sessions rather than disappearing for one long block of time.
For example, we might spend 15–20 minutes earlier in the day around the gardens and grounds, then head out for a quick 10-minute sunset session later if the light is beautiful.
Couples are often surprised by how little time we actually need - one of the advantages of South Lodge is that so many lovely locations are close together, meaning we can create lots of variety without taking you away from your guests for ages.
Having photographed many weddings at South Lodge over the years, there are always a few things I find myself sharing with couples... the best spots for photos, timings that help the day feel more relaxed, and a few little insider tips that can make a real difference.
Here are some of my favourite recommendations for making the most of a South Lodge wedding.
My favourite time for confetti at South Lodge is usually after group photos.
There’s a very practical reason for this - no confetti stuck in your hair or outfit during the family photographs!
It also tends to work more smoothly from a timeline perspective, as guests are already gathered together and everyone is ready to celebrate.
The best confetti spot is usually in an open area with enough space for guests to throw properly (rather than timidly dropping petals on you!).
Done well, confetti photographs are some of the happiest, most energetic images of the entire day, so it’s always worth planning this part properly.
One of the things I’ve noticed after photographing many weddings at South Lodge is that guests naturally tend to gather around the terrace and rear lawns during drinks reception - especially if the weather is kind.
It’s where the atmosphere really starts to build, people relax with a drink, and lots of those natural, unposed moments happen without anyone even realising.
From a photography perspective, this is often one of the richest parts of the day for genuine interactions and candid photographs.
It’s also worth keeping this in mind when planning your timeline...
Because guests naturally spread out here, it’s a great opportunity to enjoy mingling while I quietly capture hugs, laughter and all the little in-between moments that often become favourites later.
If you're planning lawn games, or outdoor drinks, this area really comes to life and creates a brilliant atmosphere in photographs.
One of the questions couples often ask is what happens if it rains on a South Lodge wedding day - and honestly, it’s rarely something to worry about here.
One of the reasons I love photographing weddings at South Lodge is that it works beautifully whatever the weather.
If rain appears, there are plenty of elegant indoor spaces that still feel completely in keeping with the style and atmosphere of the venue, rather than feeling like a compromise.
The Gladstone Suite is one of my favourite rainy-day locations thanks to its beautiful light and timeless feel, but there are also lovely indoor corners and covered areas throughout the hotel that work brilliantly for relaxed portraits.
In many ways, softer weather can actually create really flattering light for photographs. My approach is always to stay flexible and keep things feeling calm, often taking advantage of short dry spells if they appear, while making sure you still have beautiful photographs without spending the day worrying about the forecast.

South Lodge has 96 spaces to stay, consisting of a combination of rooms and suites. Options also include The Reeds (lakeside and spa lodges), and The Bothy Cottage (a private cottage for up to 8 guests).
If the weather is favourable, outside ceremonies take place at The Pavilion (up to 180 guests), a beautiful space in the grounds to the rear of the venue. For inside ceremonies, there are a range of rooms to choose from - The Wordsworth Suite (80 - 100 guests), The Glyndebourne Suite (50 - 80 guests), and The Goodwood Suite (up to 50 guests).
Your couples photos usually take place between the end of your ceremony and the start of your Wedding Breakfast.
If you're having a summer wedding with longer daylight hours we might move this photo session to after your wedding breakfast, or even later in the day to capture the magic Golden Hour light. This has the benefit of giving your more time with your guests straight after your ceremony.
Rain rarely causes a problem at South Lodge because there are plenty of beautiful indoor options for photography.
The interiors provide elegant backdrops for portraits, while covered areas and quick gaps in the weather often still allow us to step outside briefly if you’d like some outdoor photographs too.
The grounds also photograph beautifully in softer light after rain.
My approach is always to keep things relaxed and flexible, so even if the weather changes, you’ll still have natural photographs that feel like your day.
Absolutely! I’ve been photographing weddings at South Lodge for years, so I know the place inside out and have a great rapport with the whole team. I've even photographed the wedding of one of the team. (no spoilers here, but feel free to ask me!)
Based on previous weddings I've photographed here, it's usually around 90 minutes. This is the busiest time for you both in terms of photography as it incudes confetti (or bubbles), group photos (the formals), and often your couples photos.
I do this for every couple. Around two months before your wedding day we’ll have a planning meeting to confirm and run through the finer details of your day. I’ll analyse your timeline with you to make sure it gives you exactly what you want from your photos.
Golden hour changes throughout the year, but it’s usually during the final hour before sunset.
At South Lodge, this can create beautiful soft light across parts of the grounds, particularly in spring and summer. I’ll always keep an eye on the light and suggest slipping away for 10–15 minutes if conditions are perfect - enough time for a few relaxed portraits without missing much of the celebration.
There’s never any pressure to leave your guests for ages, but if the light is right, it can be well worth it.
