Why Northbrook Park Is One of Hampshire's Best Wedding Venues

Location

Northbrook Park sits on the Hampshire-Surrey border near Farnham, set within 120 acres of tranquil countryside - and yet it's surprisingly easy for guests to reach.

It's less than an hour from London, around 40 minutes from both Heathrow and Southampton Airports, and just minutes from Farnham and Alton train stations. There's also free on-site parking for guests travelling by car.

For couples wanting a beautiful countryside wedding without making it difficult for guests to get there, Northbrook Park strikes a near-perfect balance.

Ceremony Spaces

There are three stunning ceremony spaces at Northbrook Park, each with a completely different character.

The Vine Room is classically elegant - crystal chandeliers, delicate vine-leaf engravings, marble flooring, and tall French windows that flood the room with beautiful natural light and look out over the terrace and grounds.

It seats up to 120 guests for a wedding breakfast and is one of the most naturally lit ceremony rooms I've ever photographed in.

The Orangery is a wonderfully atmospheric space with a glass roof, exposed brickwork and full-length glass doors opening directly onto the walled gardens.

It seats up to 250 guests and works particularly beautifully for evening receptions, with the warm brickwork and natural light creating a wonderful atmosphere in photographs.

For outdoor ceremonies, the sunken lawn in the walled gardens is a stunning option - surrounded by rosemary, lavender and bay trees, it feels genuinely romantic and completely different to most venue ceremony spaces.

Outdoor areas

The grounds at Northbrook Park are a huge part of its appeal as a wedding venue.

Walled gardens, a lake with resident swans, water features, manicured hedges and roaming peacocks and guinea fowl create an extraordinary variety of backdrops for relaxed, natural photographs throughout the day.

The Nuns' Garden - accessed directly from the Vine Room terrace - has a large magnolia tree, water features and a wonderfully private feel, making it ideal for portraits and quieter moments between the two of you.

Drinks receptions in the walled gardens are particularly popular in warmer months, with guests mingling among the flowers and greenery while the peacocks wander freely.

Atmosphere

Weddings at Northbrook Park have a unique blend of grandeur and warmth.

The historic architecture, beautiful interiors and extraordinary grounds create a genuinely impressive setting - but it never feels stiff or formal.

There's a relaxed, welcoming energy here that seems to put everyone at ease, which is exactly what you want from your wedding day.

Why couples love it

Northbrook Park is a dry-hire venue, which means you can fully tailor your day around your own vision, suppliers and style.

That flexibility, combined with the venue's natural beauty and the exceptional team on site, is what draws so many couples to it.

The events team are genuinely experienced across a huge variety of wedding styles - from intimate gatherings to large celebrations of 250+ guests - and they run the day with calm, professional care that means you can simply enjoy every moment.

Northbrook Park welcomes couples from all backgrounds and cultures. The team have extensive experience hosting Asian, Afro-Caribbean, Jewish and LGBTQ+ weddings, and that breadth of experience shows in how smoothly and thoughtfully every celebration is managed.

Combined with the extraordinary setting, it's a venue that feels completely personal, however many weddings have taken place there before yours.

A Hampshire & Farnham Wedding Venue

For couples searching for a wedding venue on the Hampshire-Surrey border, Northbrook Park is in a category of its own.

The combination of a Grade II-listed manor house, 120 acres of grounds, walled gardens, a lake and resident peacocks creates something that's genuinely difficult to find elsewhere in the region.

What draws so many couples here is that it never feels like a wedding factory. The dry-hire model means every wedding looks and feels different - your suppliers, your style, your day - set against a backdrop that does a lot of the heavy lifting on its own.

The Vine Room

The Vine Room is one of the most naturally beautiful ceremony spaces I've encountered at any venue.

Crystal chandeliers catch and scatter light across the marble floors, while the delicate vine-leaf engravings on the walls give the room a sense of timeless elegance that photographs effortlessly.

What makes it exceptional from a photography perspective is the natural light.

The tall French windows run almost the full height of the room, flooding it with soft, even daylight that falls beautifully on skin tones during the ceremony - particularly during the vows, when couples are facing each other and the light wraps around them naturally.

There's no need for flash, no harsh shadows, no compromising on atmosphere. The light simply does its job.

The room also has wonderful depth - the registrar's table at the far end, guests seated either side of the aisle, the chandeliers overhead - which means ceremony photographs have real layers and context rather than feeling flat.

After the ceremony, the terrace just outside provides an immediate transition to the Nuns' Garden, making the flow from ceremony to drinks reception feel completely seamless in photographs.

The Nuns' Garden

Accessed directly from the Vine Room terrace, the Nuns' Garden is one of the most quietly beautiful spaces at Northbrook Park - and one that couples often overlook in favour of the wider grounds.

It's a walled garden in the truest sense... enclosed, sheltered and completely private.

Water features add a gentle background sound that makes everything feel calmer, and the large magnolia tree provides natural shade that diffuses harsh sunlight beautifully during the middle of the day - one of those details that matters far more to photographers than most people realise.

In spring, when the magnolia is in bloom, this space is extraordinary. Even outside of that season, the structure of the garden - the formal hedging, the stone paths, the water —-creates a backdrop with genuine character.

The Orangery

The Orangery is a space that rewards photographers who understand how to use it. On first glance, the exposed brickwork and darker tones feel like a contrast to the bright, airy Vine Room — but that's exactly what makes it so interesting.

The warm brick walls add colour and texture that photographs beautifully. Full-length glass doors run along one wall, opening directly onto the walled gardens and creating a natural connection between inside and outside that's brilliant for storytelling images during the wedding breakfast and evening reception.

The room has a warmth of character that really comes alive once guests are seated and the celebration is in full swing.

Speeches in the Orangery are particularly good to photograph -the combination of overhead light, intimate atmosphere and the backdrop of the brick walls creates images with a real sense of occasion.

Later in the evening, as the light outside softens and the interior lighting takes over, the Orangery has a genuinely magical quality. It's one of those spaces that changes character completely as the day progresses, which means there's always something new to capture.

The Walled Gardens

The walled gardens at Northbrook Park are where the drinks reception truly comes to life - and from a photography perspective, they're one of the richest parts of the entire day.

The scale of the space means guests spread out naturally, which is exactly what you want. Rather than everyone crowding into one spot, you get genuine interactions happening across the garden. Small groups deep in conversation, people laughing by the drinks station, children doing exactly what children do.

The layered backdrop of formal hedging, flowering plants and the warm stone walls frames all of it beautifully.

The resident peacocks and guinea fowl deserve a mention here too. They roam freely throughout the day and have a wonderful habit of appearing at exactly the right moment - fanning out during a portrait, wandering through the background of a group photograph, or simply adding an element of the unexpected that guests absolutely love.

You can't direct them and you can't predict them, which is precisely what makes them so good!

For couple portraits, the gardens offer real variety - formal hedged pathways, open lawns, flowering borders - all within a relatively compact space that means you're never far from your guests.

The Lake

The lake sits beyond the main grounds of Northbrook Park and feels like a genuinely different world from the celebration happening closer to the house.

It's quieter down here. More private. And that shift in atmosphere - from the energy of the drinks reception to something slower and more reflective - often produces the most natural, unguarded photographs of the entire day.

Couples tend to relax completely once they're away from guests, and by the time we reach the lake, the day has usually reached that point where everything feels settled and joyful rather than nervous and fast-paced.

The light near the water in the late afternoon and evening is exceptional.

Water softens and reflects the sky, and the surrounding trees filter the low sun in a way that creates a warmth and depth that's very difficult to replicate elsewhere on the grounds. In golden hour conditions, this area is about as good as it gets.

The walk down to the lake also gives couples a few minutes simply to be together - away from the noise, away from the schedule - and those transitional moments, the quiet conversations and the laughter on the way, often produce some of the most genuine photographs of the day.

The Front of the House

The frontage of Northbrook Park manor house creates a sense of occasion that's hard to overstate.

The Grade II-listed Georgian façade - symmetrical, grand and beautifully proportioned - provides a backdrop that immediately communicates the scale and character of the venue.

For group photographs, the front lawns work exceptionally well. There's enough space to organise even the largest family combinations comfortably. The clean architectural lines of the building frame groups naturally without any of the background clutter that makes some outdoor group shots feel messy.

For couples who want something more architectural and formal in feel, the front of the house provides a contrast to the softer, more romantic backdrops elsewhere in the grounds.

The Wisteria

One of the quieter details at Northbrook Park that rewards the observant photographer - the wisteria and climbing plants that frame parts of the building create a naturally romantic backdrop that changes completely with the seasons.

In late spring and early summer, when the wisteria is in full bloom, it's genuinely extraordinary. The cascading purple flowers against the warm stone of the building create a backdrop that looks almost impossibly beautiful - the kind of thing couples search Pinterest for and rarely find in real life.

Outside of the bloom season, the structure of the climbing plants still adds texture and character to the building's exterior in a way that photographs very differently to the formal architectural shots available elsewhere at the venue.

It's the sort of location that only works if you know it's there and know when to use it - which is exactly the kind of venue knowledge that makes a real difference on the day.

The Sunken Lawn

The sunken lawn in the walled gardens is Northbrook Park's outdoor ceremony space, and it's one of the most thoughtfully designed outdoor settings of any venue I've worked at.

The sunken positioning is what sets it apart... Being a level below the surrounding garden creates a natural sense of enclosure and intimacy that open lawns simply can't replicate - guests are gathered around and slightly above the couple, which gives outdoor ceremonies here a theatre-like quality that works beautifully in photographs.

The planting that surrounds the space - rosemary, lavender and bay trees alongside formal hedging - adds colour, texture and fragrance that guests always comment on.

In summer, the lavender particularly comes into its own, providing a soft purple haze in the background of ceremony photographs that feels genuinely romantic rather than staged.

One of the things I love most about photographing weddings at Northbrook Park is the sheer variety available within just a short walk. There's genuinely no need to take couples far from the celebration to create something beautiful.

Here are some of my favourite spots around Northbrook Park for gorgeous wedding photographs...

A Real Northbrook Park Wedding

Tharani and Joseph's wedding at Northbrook Park took place on a wet November day - and it was one of the most extraordinary weddings I've ever had the privilege of photographing.

With 156 guests, two cultures woven beautifully together and a schedule packed with moments that genuinely couldn't be predicted or directed, it was exactly the kind of day that reminds you why documentary wedding photography matters so much more than posed portraits ever could.

The morning began quietly - or at least as quietly as a 156-guest Sri Lankan and British wedding ever does!

Tharani was getting ready in the Bridal Preparation Suite in the manor house, surrounded by her closest family and friends. The room was full of that particular energy that only exists in the hours before a ceremony. Anticipation, laughter, the occasional tearful moment that nobody quite expected.

Before Tharani left the manor house, she had a private blessing with her parents and siblings...

It took place in the entrance hall of the manor house, beside the piano and beneath an old oil painting on the wall - a beautifully still room that gave them the privacy they needed - completely removed from everything else happening that morning.

It was one of the most deeply moving moments I've ever been asked to photograph. Incredibly private, full of meaning, and an honour to be trusted with. I don't have words that do it full justice - the photographs say it better than I can.

Joseph entered first, accompanied by his family and led by Sri Lankan drummers and acrobats performing breathtaking somersaults up and down the aisle!

The energy in the room went from quiet anticipation to something electric within seconds. One hundred and fifty-six guests watching, the sound of the drums filling every corner of the Vine Room, acrobats twisting through the air - it was extraordinary to photograph and extraordinary to witness.

Joseph took his place at the Poruwa - the ceremonial wedding platform at the front of the room - and waited.

The drummers continued...

Tharani entered with her mother, father, brothers and sisters, the procession moving slowly down the aisle behind the drummers and acrobats.

The French windows flooded the room with what November light there was, and in that moment - surrounded by her entire family, the room absolutely full of emotion - she was completely composed. Radiant. The kind of moment a photographer waits for.

Because the rain was persistent throughout the afternoon, the drinks reception remained in the Vine Room rather than spilling out into the gardens. Group photographs were done against the backdrop of the French windows which framed them perfectly. The tall window bays frame groups naturally and the light through them is consistently beautiful, even in November.

Couple portraits were planned in careful detail in advance, specifically with the November weather in mind.

We had a route that could be completed in around 15 minutes - along the covered walkway outside the Orangery, on into the Vine Room for some relaxed, laughing, completely natural portraits, then quickly across to the grand covered entrance portico at the front of the manor house.

From there, the final stop was a short hop over to the covered entrance to the Vine Room, where the uplighters were already casting a warm amber glow up the walls.

The resulting image - Tharani and Joseph framed by that archway, the gravel in front of them, the walls lit from below is one of my favourite photographs... atmospheric, romantic and completely Northbrook Park.

They loved the fact that it took barely 15 minutes. It meant they could get straight back to their guests and the party - which was, in every sense, where the real story of their day was being told.

The entrance into the Orangery for the wedding breakfast was another joyful moment. Announced into the room, Tharani and Joseph walked in together to a reception of cheering and clapping from their guests who were absolutely ready to celebrate!

They headed straight to the cake - the cutting taking place before the starters with Joseph's late grandmother's cake knife used with the whole room watching... followed by the two of them feeding each other cake with the kind of laughter that fills a room and makes everyone around them happy just to witness it.

Speeches followed - the father of the bride first, then Joseph - and then the food arrived. A Sri Lankan menu served with the kind of warmth and generosity that felt completely in keeping with the day.

By the time the first dance came around, the Orangery had been transformed. Orange fairy lights filled the ceiling of the room, casting a warm glow across everything below.

The band opened with Elbow's One Day Like This, and the dance floor didn't really empty after that.

What followed was one of the most joyful evenings I've photographed...

The music moved between British chart hits and traditional Sri Lankan music throughout the night, reflecting both sides of the family perfectly.

It was a perfect Northbrook Park wedding in every sense that matters...

Joyful, emotional, completely unique and full of moments that no amount of planning could have predicted or directed. Just two people, their families, their cultures and a November day that turned out to be exactly what it needed to be.

A Photographer’s Guide to Weddings at Northbrook Park

The Best Sunset Location for Wedding Photos at Northbrook Park

If you're hoping for beautiful evening portraits at Northbrook Park, the area around the lake is my favourite spot as the light softens towards golden hour.

In spring and summer especially, the low warm light filtering through the surrounding trees creates a quality that's almost impossible to replicate earlier in the day. It's soft, flattering and beautiful on skin tones - and the private, peaceful atmosphere down here makes for relaxed photographs that feel genuinely personal.

What many couples don't realise is that timing matters far more than location. I'll usually keep an eye on the light during dinner and suggest slipping away for just 10–15 minutes when conditions are at their best. It's enough time for some beautiful portraits without missing too much of the celebration.

The great advantage at Northbrook Park is that this area doesn't feel far away at all. You can be there and back without anyone noticing you were gone.

Where Group Photos Work Best at Northbrook Park

For group photographs, the front lawns in front of the manor house work particularly well.

There's plenty of open space to organise larger family combinations comfortably, while the impressive façade of the building provides a clean, elegant backdrop that looks genuinely spectacular.

It also works well from a logistics perspective - after the ceremony in the Vine Room, guests naturally flow outside, meaning rounding everyone up is far simpler than it sounds.

I'm always a big believer in keeping group photographs efficient and well-organised at Northbrook Park. Enough time to capture the important combinations - without it becoming a long, formal affair that takes over the relaxed feel of your day.

How Long Should Couples Photos Take at Northbrook Park?

Around 30 minutes for couple portraits is usually ideal at Northbrook Park - though I'd often recommend splitting this across two smaller sessions rather than disappearing for one long block.

For example, we might spend 15–20 minutes in the Nuns' Garden and around the Orangery earlier in the day, then head to the lake for a quick 10-minute sunset session in the evening if the light is looking beautiful.

Couples are often surprised by how little time we actually need - one of the advantages of Northbrook Park is that so many extraordinary locations are genuinely close together, meaning we can create real variety without taking you away from your guests for long.

The Best Time for Confetti Photos at Northbrook Park

My favourite timing for confetti at Northbrook Park is usually after group photographs are done.
There's a very practical reason for this - no confetti stuck in hair or outfits during the family photos!

It also tends to work more naturally from a timeline perspective, with guests already gathered and the energy of the day fully built up.

The Nuns' Garden is a brilliant space for confetti - enclosed enough that guests throw properly rather than just drifting petals in the general direction, but open enough for plenty of space and movement in photographs.

Done well, confetti photographs are some of the most joyful, energetic images of the entire day - absolutely worth planning properly.

Having photographed weddings at Northbrook Park, there are always a few things worth sharing - the best spots for photographs, timings that help everything flow, and a few insider tips that can make a real difference to how relaxed and natural your images look.

Here are some of my favourite recommendations for getting the most from your Northbrook Park wedding photography.

Where Guests Naturally Gather at Northbrook Park

One of the things I've noticed after photographing weddings at Northbrook Park is that guests naturally gravitate towards the walled gardens during drinks reception, particularly when the weather is kind.

It's where the atmosphere truly starts to build. People relax, drinks flow, and those brilliant candid moments - the hugs, the laughter, the in-between expressions - happen completely naturally without anyone needing to be directed.

It's also worth keeping in mind when planning your timeline... this golden period between ceremony and wedding breakfast is one of the richest for natural, documentary-style photography.

How to Avoid Stress on Your Northbrook Park Wedding Day

One of the most consistent things I see make a big difference on a Northbrook Park wedding day is a little extra time built into the morning.

Even 20–30 minutes of buffer before the ceremony can change the whole atmosphere of the day.

Hair and makeup may run slightly over, guests sometimes arrive later than expected, and there's real value in having a few moments to simply breathe and take everything in before it all begins.

The weddings at Northbrook Park that feel most relaxed and natural in photographs aren't the ones with the tightest timelines... they're the ones with space built in.

Rainy Day Wedding Photo Locations at Northbrook Park

Couples often worry about rain at Northbrook Park - and honestly, it's one of the last things to stress about here.

Both the Vine Room and the Orangery provide genuinely beautiful indoor options that feel completely in keeping with the atmosphere of the venue, rather than feeling like a compromise.

The Vine Room in particular, with its natural light and elegant interiors, works brilliantly for relaxed portraits even when it's throwing it down outside.

There are also covered areas and sheltered spots in the gardens that can work perfectly if there are breaks in the weather.

My approach is always to stay relaxed and flexible - often taking advantage of even short dry spells to step outside - while making sure that whatever the weather, you still have photographs that feel natural, beautiful and genuinely yours.

How many wedding guests can Northbrook Park hold?

Northbrook Park can accommodate up to 250 guests for a wedding ceremony, breakfast or reception.

The Orangery seats up to 250 guests, while the Vine Room is ideal for up to 120 for a wedding breakfast.

The venue operates on a dry hire basis, giving you full flexibility over suppliers and how you use the spaces throughout the day.

Where do ceremonies usually take place at Northbrook Park?

Most couples choose the Vine Room for indoor ceremonies - an elegant space with crystal chandeliers, marble floors and tall French windows.

For outdoor ceremonies, the sunken lawn in the walled gardens is a beautiful option, surrounded by herbs and formal hedging. Couples can also use the Orangery for ceremonies depending on the size of their wedding.

What time is best for couples photos at Northbrook Park?

Couples portraits usually take place during drinks reception - in the window between your ceremony finishing and guests being seated for the wedding breakfast.

For summer weddings with longer daylight hours, I'll often suggest holding a second shorter session later in the evening, around golden hour near the lake. This gives you more time with your guests after the ceremony while still taking advantage of the most beautiful light of the day.

What happens if it rains at Northbrook Park?

Rain very rarely causes a problem at Northbrook Park.

Both the Vine Room and the Orangery are beautiful indoor portrait spaces that feel completely natural and in keeping with the venue's character.

The covered terrace areas also provide options, and I'll always make the most of any dry spells if they appear.

Softer weather can actually produce wonderfully flattering, even light for photographs - so even a grey day at Northbrook Park often produces images that surprise couples when they see them.

Are you an experienced wedding photographer at Northbrook Park?

Yes - I've photographed weddings at Northbrook Park and know the venue's spaces, light and logistics well.

I also work closely with couples in the run-up to their wedding to plan a photography timeline that makes the most of everything the venue has to offer.

How long is the drinks reception at Northbrook Park?

Based on weddings I've photographed there, drinks receptions at Northbrook Park are usually around 90 minutes.

This is one of the busiest periods from a photography perspective - it typically includes confetti or bubbles, group photographs and couple portraits, so planning this section of the timeline carefully always pays off.

Can you help us plan our photography timeline for Northbrook Park?

Absolutely - this is something I do with every couple.

Around two months before your wedding we'll have a detailed planning meeting to go through your timeline together.

I'll look at your schedule, the time of year, expected golden hour timings and the specifics of your day to make sure the photography side of things is planned in a way that feels relaxed rather than rushed.

FAQs About Northbrook Park Weddings

When is golden hour at Northbrook Park?

Golden hour falls during the final hour before sunset and changes throughout the year. In spring and summer at Northbrook Park, the light across the grounds - particularly near the lake - can be stunning during this period.

I'll always keep an eye on conditions during the evening and suggest slipping away briefly when the light is at its best.

It's never a long time away from your guests (usually 10–15 minutes) but when the light is right at Northbrook Park, it's absolutely worth it.
