Avoid Overheating on your Wedding Day

Some weddings you photograph and feel grateful to have witnessed. Tharani and Joseph’s November wedding at Northbrook Park was one of those days.

One hundred and fifty-six guests. Two cultures woven together with real care and intention. Sri Lankan drummers and acrobats leading the procession down the aisle of the Vine Room. A dance floor that stayed full until the band played their last note. And two people at the centre of it all who simply wanted to celebrate with everyone they love – without fuss, without pressure, without spending their wedding day in front of a camera.

It was, without question, one of the most extraordinary wedding days I’ve ever photographed.

The Morning — Bridal Preparations at Northbrook Park

Tharani was getting ready in the Bridal Preparation Suite in the manor house, surrounded by her closest family and friends. Hair, makeup, sari draping – the room was full of that particular energy that only exists in the hours before a ceremony. Anticipation and laughter in equal measure, with the occasional tearful moment that nobody quite expected.

The Private Blessing

Before leaving the suite, Tharani had a private blessing with her parents and siblings. It took place in the main part of the manor house, beside the piano and beneath an old oil painting on the wall – a beautifully still corner of the building that felt completely removed from everything else happening that morning.

It was one of the most deeply moving moments I’ve ever been asked to photograph. Incredibly private, full of meaning, and an honour to be trusted with. The photographs say it far better than I can.

The Ceremony — The Vine Room, Northbrook Park

The Vine Room at Northbrook Park is one of the most beautiful ceremony spaces I’ve ever photographed in. Crystal chandeliers, marble floors, tall French windows flooding the room with natural light. On a good day, it’s extraordinary. On the day Tharani and Joseph got married, with 156 guests seated and the air absolutely charged with anticipation, it was something else entirely.

Joseph entered first, accompanied by his family and led by Sri Lankan drummers and acrobats performing breathtaking somersaults the full length of the aisle. The energy in the room went from quiet anticipation to something completely electric within seconds. The drums filled every corner of the Vine Room. The acrobats twisted through the air between the rows of guests. One hundred and fifty-six people watched in astonishment.

Joseph took his place at the Poruwa – the ceremonial wedding platform at the front of the room – and waited for Tharani and her family to walk down the aisle…

Tharani entered with her mother, father, brothers and sisters, the procession moving slowly down the aisle behind the drummers and acrobats. The French windows flooded the room with what November light there was, and in that moment – surrounded by her entire family, the room absolutely full of emotion – she was completely composed. Radiant. The kind of moment a photographer waits for.

After the ceremony, confetti was thrown inside the Vine Room – the whole room erupting in cheers, arms raised, 156 people celebrating together in one of the most joyful moments of the entire day.

Drinks Reception

Because the rain was persistent throughout the afternoon, the drinks reception remained in the Vine Room rather than spilling out into the gardens. Group photographs were done against the backdrop of the French windows – which, as it turned out, was a brilliant alternative. The tall window bays frame groups naturally and the light through them is consistently beautiful, even in November.

They walked straight to the cake – the cutting taking place before the starters, with the whole room watching, music playing and the two of them feeding each other cake with the kind of laughter that fills a room and makes everyone around them happy just to witness it.

Speeches followed – the father of the bride first, then Joseph. The Orangery’s warm brickwork and fairy-lit ceiling made for a beautiful backdrop throughout – intimate and atmospheric in equal measure.

Couple Portraits — After the Wedding Breakfast

Because the rain had made portraits impossible earlier in the day, we found our moment after the wedding breakfast – and if anything, it worked better. The uplighters were already on, the atmosphere was fully built, and Tharani and Joseph had the relaxed energy that only comes after a few hours of celebrating with everyone they love.

Couple portraits were planned in careful detail in advance, specifically with November weather in mind. We had a route that could be completed in around 15 minutes – through the covered walkway outside the Orangery, into the Vine Room for some relaxed, laughing, completely natural portraits, then across to the grand covered entrance portico at the front of the manor house.

The final stop was back under the covered entrance to the Vine Room, where the uplighters were already casting a warm amber glow up the stone walls. The resulting image – Tharani and Joseph framed by that archway, the gravel in front of them, the walls lit from below – is one of my favourite photographs of the entire year.

Tharani and Joseph were genuinely delighted that it took barely 15 minutes. It meant they could get straight back to the party – which was, in every sense, where the real story of their day was being told.

The First Dance & Evening Reception

By the time the first dance came around, the Orangery had been transformed. Fairy lights filled the ceiling, casting a warm golden glow across everything below. The band opened with Elbow’s One Day Like This – and with 156 guests forming a circle around them, it was one of those first dances that feels genuinely cinematic.

The dance floor didn’t really empty after that.

The music moved between British chart hits and traditional Sri Lankan music throughout the evening, reflecting both sides of the family perfectly – and the photographs reflect that energy completely.

At one point, Tharani’s grandmother made her way onto the dance floor during the traditional Sri Lankan music and absolutely owned it. The photographs of her dancing are among my favourites from the entire evening.

A November Wedding at Northbrook Park

Tharani and Joseph’s day is a brilliant reminder of something I try to share with every couple planning a winter wedding – November at Northbrook Park is not a compromise. The Vine Room’s natural light works beautifully even on a grey day. The Orangery is warm, atmospheric and full of character. And the covered spaces around the venue mean that rain almost never causes the problems couples worry it will.

What you lose in outdoor portraits you more than gain in atmosphere – and Tharani and Joseph’s gallery is proof of that.

It was a perfect Northbrook Park wedding in every sense that matters. Joyful, emotional, completely unique and full of moments that no amount of planning could have predicted or directed.

A brilliant couple, an extraordinary day, and an absolute privilege to photograph.
