Please tell me about your business and style
My business is hair and makeup for weddings, fashion shoots, editorials and filming.
I have a background and experience in most areas of the industry and therefore feel that my style is very flexible depending on what I am doing.
However my favourite style of hair and makeup at the moment is dewy warm complexions, soft glam and hair that looks effortless.
What would be the most important piece of advice you would give a couple?
The most important piece of advice I would give couples planning their wedding is to think about all the weddings they have been and to and pick the bits that they liked and didn't like about each.
Doing this lets them really understand what they want out of their own wedding and tailor their day to suit them.
What are the most popular requests and current trends for next year?
The most popular makeup requests I get are for soft glam using warm earthy tones - which is a great choice as it suits everyone!
Hair is always split between classic textured up-dos and hair down with soft curls.
Do you have a favourite review that you can share?
I don't have a favourite review as I always am so grateful when brides take the time after their wedding to get back in touch with me.
However, I find the most rewarding feedback is when I get new enquires from prospective clients who I have been recommended to by previous brides.
This for me is the biggest compliment as I know they must have been happy with my work to recommend me to someone else!
What do you love about the wedding business?
The main thing I love about the wedding business is how friendly everyone is. After working in fashion for years it was a breath of fresh air to turn up on a wedding morning to people in high spirits and being friendly.
I also love how you get work based on your skills and not who you know, eliminating the clique culture I witnessed when working in fashion.
What is your favourite personal touch you have seen at a wedding?
My favourite personal touch that I have seen at a wedding was song requests on the RSVP cards. I thought it was absolutely genius as it made sure that everyone would get to dance to their choice of song without having to pester the DJ.
This is definitely an idea I will be stealing when I eventually get married!
Memories of a favourite wedding?
My favourite weddings are always people who have marquees in their own gardens on a warm summers day. I think it creates such a lovely atmosphere and is often more relaxing for the bridal party to be getting ready at home rather than a hotel.
Also, it eliminates any panic when you realise you've forgotten something at home!
I think theres something very warming about getting married surrounded by childhood memories and adds a much more personal touch than getting married in a hotel.
Tell me about your favourite wedding traditions that you’ve come across
In my fiancé's family their father has presented each child with a massive chest on their wedding day containing keepsakes and things he's kept from their childhood such as school reports, drawings, toys, medals etc.
I think it's such a lovely thing to do and shows a real level of care and attention as its been collected over decades.
I'm excited to see what my fiancé's chest will contain when we get married!
What do you think makes a good wedding supplier?
I think the key to being a good wedding supplier is listening to what your client wants.
I have heard from clients in the past how at a friend or family members wedding the supplier pushed their own views onto the client rather than doing what the client asked for (especially with hair and makeup).
Your wedding day should be all about you as a couple and I think it's important to find suppliers who will actually take on board what you have asked for an execute your vision just how you imagined.
I also think it's important to get on with your supplier especially if your role is something like hair and makeup or photography as you will be spending large chunks of the day with them, so pick someone you like!
How do you make a bride and grooms wedding experience the best it can be?
As a hair and makeup artist I don't tend to deal very much with grooms, but for brides I like to make sure that I reply quickly to emails and provide thorough replies.
I also like to talk them through the process as often brides haven't been part of a bridal party before and so don't always know what to expect from their HMUA.
I am always prepared for all requests, all skin tones, all hair types. I often hear from brides in East Sussex that they worry about HMUAs being able to cater for different complexions, this is something that I always reassure them on with my diverse background in fashion and previous clients of various ethnicities.
Finally I like to take as much stress out of their morning as possible! I do this by having a trial so that they know exactly how they are going to look on their wedding day.
I also create a schedule with the bride so they know on the day exactly what order everyone is getting ready in and what time they will be ready by to help make their morning as smooth and relaxing as possible.
